The Department of Cleft Lip and Palate, West China Hospital of Stomatology is a specialty of cleft care for over 70 years. The department is the largest center in China for the treatment and research of craniofacial cleft and other congenital malformations. The department brings together experts and scholars of the highest level in the field of cleft lip and palate treatment. The department is taking the leading role in advancing the treatment and research domestically and internationally.

Clinic
Based on the long-term research work and clinical practice for the past decades, our team has explored a set of theoretical and technical methods. The "Chinese localized cleft lip and palate sequence treatment model", based on the series of "West-China methods" for repairing cleft lip and palate and related diseases, has gained recognition from colleagues and benefited the patients. Our department has the largest ward for cleft lip and palate in the country, and the sequence treatment includes early preoperative orthodontics, primary repair and secondary reconstruction for cleft lip and palate, bone grafting for alveolar cleft, postoperative orthodontic treatment, orthognathic surgery, and ear canal incision with middle ear exploration. Meanwhile, the non-surgical treatments for patients with cleft lip and palate are also carried out by the department, such as speech treatment, psychological consultation and treatment, developmental assessment, nutritional management, and wound and scar management.

Education
Our education emphasizes on developing training programs for postgraduate students, residents and practicing surgeons in diagnosis and surgical skills for craniofacial cleft, and other common oral and maxillofacial diseases. We aim to graduate students with advanced clinical skills, a broad perspective, and a solid research foundation. Our department has also built strong friendship through academic relations with lots of prestigious institutions and Affiliations, including Columbia University, Children's Hospital of London Health Science Centre, New York University, Kyushu University, Chang Gung Memorial Hospital, University of Lille, Boston Children’s Hospital of Harvard University, etc. Our department is the leading hospital and training base in China for those famous domestic and foreign charity funds, such as "Smile Train", "Rebirth Operation", "Operation Smile", and " Smile Angel Foundation".

Research
Our department is an important center for basic and clinical research for craniofacial cleft in China. It has successively obtained 15 grants from the National Natural Science Foundation of China (including 1 key foundation) and 3 international cooperation foundations. Hundreds of articles, including more than 200 SCI-indexed papers, and more than 10 books, such as "Primary Cleft Lip and Palate Repair", "Cleft Lip and Palate Surgery", " Atlas of Cleft Lip and Palate Surgery ", " Comprehensive Cleft Care", the series of "Cleft Lip and Palate Sequence Treatments", "Guide to Medical Treatments for Facial Cleft", "Cleft Lip and Cleft Facial Deformity” are from our department. The project, "Basic and Clinical Research on the Impact of Cleft Lip and Palate Surgery on the Growth and Development of the Maxilla", won the Sichuan Science and Technology Progress Award; "Computer-aided Drawing, Measurement and Evaluation System for Unilateral Cleft Lip", "Research on New Theories and New Methods of Clinical Treatment of Cleft Lip and Palate" won respectively the Ministry of Health Science and Technology Progress Award and the Chinese Medical Science and Technology Award..
