Overview
The Department of Oral Implantology of West China Hospital of Stomatology is the earliest dental implant clinical, scientific research, and teaching base established in China. In the late 1970s, Professor Zhiqing Chen cooperated with Chengdu Chemical Reagent Factory to synthesize hydroxyapatite ceramics for the first time, and carried out basic and applied research on bone and tooth restoration. In 1980, the first artificial tooth implant research group in the nation was established by Professor Anyu Chen. In 1988, Professor Chen collaborated with Professor Xingdong Zhang in the development of hydroxyapatite-coated dental implants. In 1991, Professor Anyu Chen published KOUQIANG ZHONGZHIXUE (Oral Implantology), which was China’s first monograph on implantology. With each milestone, the department has laid a solid foundation for the development of oral implantology in China. More recently, the department continues to contribute to the development of implantology in China, with Professor Ping Gong leading the publication of Oral Implantology, 1st Edition, an undergraduate stomatology textbook, as the chief editor. In 2019, Professor Gong led the department to win the first prize in the Excellent Achievement Award of Scientific Research in Colleges and Universities (Science and Technology Advancement Category). Currently, the department is one of the three National Key Clinical Specialties in Implantology approved nationwide. The department is equipped with advanced medical apparatus and instruments, and has 37 dental treatment units and 6 operation rooms. There are 9 professors, 12 associate professors and 5 lecturers. All staff members have received systematic training in dental implant surgery abroad in Europe, the United States, Japan and other countries and regions, and have invented and modified numerous implant surgical and restorative techniques, which have been published in the world's leading journals of oral implantology.
Clinic
The department has obtained several National and Ministry of Health clinically superior discipline construction projects, as well as provincial and municipal science and technology funding. World-class dental implant systems are used to provide patients with various types of implant-supported denture restorations. The department has strong technical force and advanced medical treatments, such as sticky bone technique to repair three-wall defects, customized bone blocks to repair horizontal and vertical defects, customized titanium mesh to repair one-wall, two-wall and vertical defects, inlay osteotome sinus augmentation technique, palatal roll envelope technique, and apical U-shape splitting technique. Digital guided implant surgery and interdisciplinary treatment are also widely carried out in our department. We also offer 2 specialties: Minimally Invasive Implant Surgery and Implant-Supported Restoration for Maxillofacial Defects.
Education
The department is a doctoral and master’s degree granting point of dental implantology, as well as a National Continuing Education and Training Base. It is also one of the three ITI Scholarship Centers in China. As the Chinese saying goes “传承创新 勇攀高峰 (chuán chéng chuàng xīn yǒng pān gāo fēng)”, which translates to “inherit the spirit of innovation, and boldly challenge new heights”. We modulate our education program to train and educate undergraduate and graduate students, and dental professionals with the fundamental knowledge and clinical skills to treat patients and diseases, and the critical thinking skills to bravely innovate in clinical and basic research studies, just as the forerunners did.
The department prepares graduate and predoctoral students through mentor training, department training, academic seminars, clinical reports, clinical technology progress reports, case reports, hot research topic reviews, and literature reviews. Furthermore, thesis proposal and mid-term progress reports are held regularly every March and November, with experts invited as judges to review each report and provide critical suggestions. Since 1997, the department has been educating and training dental professionals in continuing education programs with the mode of trainees shadowing the mentors in clinical work. Operation rooms are also open for surgical observation, while lectures, seminars, discussions of clinical cases, and opportunities to participate in clinical research are readily available to trainees.
Research
In the Department of Oral Implantology of West China Hospital of Stomatology, we strive to explore, improve and innovate the treatment methodology with our research. Our research includes not only basic studies, such as the molecular mechanism of osseointegration in disease states, the role of skeletal stem cells or epigenetics in regulating alveolar bone development and metabolism, and biomaterials for bone regeneration, but also clinical studies on innovative surgical techniques. These studies have been published in Science Advances, Nature Communications, Bone Research, Plos Genetics, Journal of Dental Research, Clinical Implant Dentistry and Related Research, and others. The aim of these research efforts is to develop new clinical and scientific approaches that will ultimately improve treatment outcomes.
