Introduction: Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is a type of treatment that involves the application of photosensitizer and a special light source. In the presence of oxygen, photosensitizer activated by specific light leads to localized photodamage and cell death by the formation of singlet oxygen and free radicals.
Indications: Oral potentially malignant disorders, such as oral leukoplakia, oral erythroplakia, oral lichen planus; oral infections such as human papilloma virus infection.
Advantages: PDT is a highly selective and minimally invasive technique with mild adverse reactions. It can remove the lesion without causing severe scarring or malformation and is particularly suitable for the treatment of lesions on the oral mucosa.
