The Department of Orthognathic and TMJ Surgery of West China Hospital of Stomatology is one of the pioneers of modern orthognathic and temporomandibular joint surgery, as well as jaw plastic surgery in China. The department is a national key discipline of the Ministry of Education, a key clinical specialty of the National Health Commission, and a national training base for residents and specialists in oral and maxillofacial surgery.
In addition to common oral and maxillofacial diseases, we focus on the surgical treatment of
1.developmental jaw abnormalities, including maxillary or mandibular protrusion, retrusion, and facial asymmetry;
2. maxillofacial plastic problems, including hypertrophy of mandibular angle, prominence of zygomatic arch, and deformities of nose or chin;
3.secondary dental and maxillofacial deformities or defects caused by maxillofacial fracture or tumor resection;
4. temporomandibular joint diseases, including temporomandibular joint disorders, injuries, ankylosis (mouth opening limitation), and tumors.

Education
The Department of Orthognathic and TMJ Surgery is the higher training center of orthognathic and TMJ surgery specialty in China. Our education focuses on developing a training program for postgraduate students, residents, and practicing dentists in the diagnosis, treatment plan design, and surgical treatment of dentofacial deformities and temporomandibular joint diseases. All postgraduate students receive basic science research training in oral biology. Academic and residency programs are also offered.
Research
The department is currently the only specialized unit in China that integrates surgical correction of dental and maxillofacial deformities, facial contour plastic surgery, temporomandibular joint surgery, and related clinical and basic research. It has successively led more than 30 national, provincial, and ministerial scientific research projects, including the National Key Basic Research Development Plan (973 Plan), the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars, and the National Natural Science Foundation of China, with a total scientific research funding of more than 10 million. The department members hold academic positions such as chairman and vice-chairman of national and provincial specialized committees. The department has obtained the second prize of the National Science and Technology Progress Award, the first prize of the Science and Technology Progress Award of Sichuan Province, the first and second prizes of the Science and Technology Progress Award of the Ministry of Education, and the first prize of the Science and Technology Progress Award of the Chinese Stomatological Association. The department has more than 20 national invention patents and utility model patents.
