Dept. of Pediatric Dentistry
Overview
As the first pediatric dental specialty in China, the Department of Pediatric Dentistry, West China Hospital of Stomatology, was established in 1948. To date, this Pediatric Dental Center is renowned in the whole country for its first-class domestic medical service, education, and clinical and basic research. The department was authorized as the Children's Oral Diseases Diagnosis and Treatment Center in Western China, awarded National Key Clinical Specialties in 2013, and qualified as the National Pediatric Dentistry Good Clinical Practice Center. The department has 59 members, including 24 dentists and 35 nurses. Among the dentists, there are 4 professors, 8 associate professors, and 12 lecturers, including 20 with overseas study experience. All the staff members win a prestigious reputation for their high level of education, skilled clinical technology, and serving patients with love and responsibility.

Clinic
The department provides oral health management, as well as oral diseases prevention, diagnosis and treatment for children and adolescents aged 0-18 years and those with special care needs. Six subspecialties have been established, including children's caries, endodontic and periapical diseases, dental trauma, special children's oral care, children's malocclusion guidance, and children's dental surgery clinics.
The department takes the lead in multidisciplinary oral care and early intervention and management of occlusal development in children. The updated and innovative dental clinic technologies are applied here to offer extraordinary dental care to patients, such as comprehensive treatment of dental diseases in children with special needs under general anesthesia/sedation, MICD clinic techniques, strip crown restoration for primary incisors, stainless steel crown restoration for primary molars and immature permanent teeth, ceramic crown restoration for primary teeth, Quartz-fiber flexible splint for traumatic dislocated tooth, minimally invasive laser treatment technique for pediatric dental diseases, chemo-mechanical minimally invasive caries removal technique, esthetic restoration technique for immature permanent teeth with large lesions, and early preventive and interceptive orthodontic treatment for malocclusions in children and adolescents.

Education
The department provides comprehensive clinical training for graduate students, residents and postgraduate trainees, aiming to improve the health of children and adolescents by educating clinical students about the physical and mental growth of children and the art and science of pediatric dentistry. The department not only provides the Pediatric Dentistry class for Bachelor and overseas students in English, which has been awarded the National First Line Course, but also provides classes for graduate students and residents to advance their clinical and scientific view. The Department of Pediatric Dentistry is qualified as the National Pediatric Dentistry Continuing Education Base and the National Standardized Training Base for Pediatric Dental Specialists. Academic and residency programs are also offered.

Research
The main research interests of the department include oral microbiota associated mechanisms of oral diseases of children, basic and clinical study of the mechanisms of preventive and interceptive orthodontics, mechanisms and regeneration engineering of tooth development, genetics and epigenetics in tooth development. The faculty of the department are funded by multiple sources of research grants and they have published numerous cutting-edge papers, textbooks and books. Meanwhile, the department has incubated multiple patents on innovative biological root regeneration technology and orthodontic appliance suitable for Chinese children. The faculty has been granted national and provincial Award for Achievement in the Advancement of Science and Technology.
