The Department of Periodontics of West China Hospital of Stomatology, Sichuan University, is the earliest periodontics department established in China. Currently, there are thirty-six members in the team, including five professors/chief physicians, seven associate professors/associate chief physicians/associate research fellows, five attending doctors and eighteen professional nurses. As a National Key Clinical Specialty, we offer patients high-quality medical services. Over the past decades, we have been dedicated to educating elite students in the field of stomatology. At the same time, we play an important part in academic exchanges and activities with peers at home and abroad.
Clinic
There are forty-one dental treatment units and seven operating rooms in the department, which is equipped with advanced medical apparatus and instruments, such as periodontal endoscope, lasers, and Florida Probe, to diagnose and treat a broad spectrum of periodontal diseases with state-of-the-art care. A full range of periodontal services are offered, including scaling and root planning, minimally invasive periodontal treatment, multidisciplinary treatment of periodontal diseases, and various periodontal surgeries, such as gingivectomy, periodontal flap surgery, guided tissue regeneration, crown lengthening, mucogingival esthetic surgery, and implant surgery.
Remarkably, the oral malodor specialty, established by the Department of Periodontics over ten years ago, is dedicated to providing patients with authoritative and reliable consultation, and medical services under the guidance of well-known experts and professional breath detectors. Education
The department is the deputy director unit of both the Periodontics Committee and the Oral Laser Committee of the Chinese Stomatology Association. As a doctoral and master’s academic degree granting point of Periodontology, the department is committed not only to expanding its innovative educational program, transmitting scientific knowledge, and providing theoretical and clinical instruction in Periodontology at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels, but also to providing continuing dental education courses for practicing dentists suitable for the level of competency of the students.
Research
The faculty members are actively involved in various basic and applied sciences related to Periodontology. The primary research areas include, but are not limited to, studies of the pathogenesis of periodontal diseases, the relationship between periodontitis and systemic diseases, periodontal regeneration, periodontal tissue development, novel materials and new technologies for the diagnosis and treatment of periodontal diseases. The department has been funded by more than twenty provincial and national projects. The research progress of oral microbes and cardiovascular diseases and periodontal tissue development is in a leading position in the periodontal field.
