In 2017, West China School/Hospital of Stomatology, Sichuan University was approved by the National Health and Family Planning Commission and the State Food and Drug Administration as one of the National Institutes for Stem Cell Clinical Research.
The hospital has placed significant emphasis on the development of the institute, offering substantial support through human, material, and financial resources. Dedicated spaces, facilities, and equipment have been allocated to the institute, promoting academic exchanges and providing medical training for healthcare personnel. The institute has established the Stem Cell Research Academic Committee and the Stem Cell Clinical Evaluation Ethics Committee. Further, the institute published the regulations for stem cell clinical research and the standard operating procedures for stem cell clinical trials. Quality management and risk control programs have also been established.
The institute has established platforms for basic research, translational medicine, and clinical trial, supported by the other five national research platforms and eight National Key Clinical Departments within the hospital. The institute has achieved innovative breakthroughs in several areas, including the regulation mechanism of stem cell differentiation during the development of dental and maxillofacial deformities, the research on the basis and repair technology of stem cell regeneration, and the research on key prevention and treatment techniques for oral cancer prevention. At the same time, the organization has strengthened its collaboration with relevant departments and enterprises to form a comprehensive stem cell industry encompassing research, production, education, and application. These efforts are expected to actively promote the translation of stem cell-related research into practical applications and drive industrial growth.
