As the first orthodontic department established in China, and a National Key Clinical Specialty, the Department of Orthodontics of West China Hospital of Stomatology, Sichuan University, boasts core strength in clinical practice, dental education, and scientific research related to malocclusion and craniofacial deformities. The department has a large and strong professional team, including 10 professors, 21 associate professors and 14 lecturers. All faculty members in the department have doctoral degrees and overseas study experiences.
Clinic
Faculty experts and postgraduate students under the supervision of the Department of Orthodontics offer patients a wide variety of orthodontic treatment, from early treatment for children to comprehensive treatment for adults. The latest technology tools such as CBCT scan, intraoral scan, 3D facial cameras, and 3D printers, are used to provide accuracy and visualization in treatment planning, as well as effectiveness and efficiency in patient care. In close collaboration with experts in related dental specialties in West China Hospital of Stomatology, multidisciplinary care for complex cases such as TMJ-TMD therapy, orthodontic-orthognathic joint treatment, and periodontal-orthodontic joint therapy, is facilitated to ensure the best benefit for patients. Both traditional and innovative orthodontic appliances, including functional appliances, edgewise braces, self-ligated braces, clear aligner therapy, lingual braces, and individual customized braces, are utilized to provide diverse treatment options for patients.
Education
The Department of Orthodontics is the higher training center of orthodontic specialty in China. Our education focuses on developing training programs for postgraduate students, residents and practicing dentists in the diagnosis, prevention, and correction of malocclusion and dentofacial abnormalities. Our aim is for graduate students to have advanced clinical skills, a solid scientific foundation, and a broad vision of oral health care. All graduate students receive basic science research training in oral biology. Academic and residency programs are also offered.
Research
The main research interests of the department range from biomechanics and biological mechanisms underlying orthodontic movement, craniofacial growth and development, orofacial pain mechanism, three-dimensional diagnosis and treatment approach, to digital orthodontic workflow, etc. Funded by more than 20 NSFC projects, the research carried out by the faculty members is consistent and innovative, with the leading place in the orthodontic field. We have successfully developed a series of orthodontic innovations with patent, such as the HX preadjusted appliance, HXZ self-ligating appliance, gate spring torqueing auxiliary, and U-Ceph cephalometric software, imposing far-reaching and extensive influence globally and domestically.
