The Department of Cariology and Endodontics, West China Hospital of Stomatology, Sichuan University is the first Cariology and Endodontics specialty established in China, one of the first Doctoral and Master's Academic Degree Granting Disciplines, and one of the first National Key Clinical Specialties and standardization resident training bases. The department compiles national standardized textbooks for undergraduate and graduate dental education, including Cariology and Endodontics, and Cariology, and is the chair member of the Special Committee of Cariology and Endodontics in Chinese Stomatological Association. The department currently consists of 69 doctors/nurses, including 10 professors/chief doctors, 17 associate professors/associate chief doctors, 1 co-chief nurse and 16 attending doctors.

Clinic
The mainly treated diseases in the department include dental caries, pulp and periapical diseases, tooth developmental disease, dental trauma, tooth hypersensitivity, etc. Aiming to improve people’s oral health, the department is focused on the development/application of novel diagnostics and therapeutics including minimally invasive caries treatment, composite resin aesthetic restoration, tooth bleaching, digital dental restoration, tooth desensitization treatment, vital pulp preservation, microscopic root canal therapy, apical microsurgery, intentional tooth replantation, and pulp Revascularization. The department has led the draft of the guideline for the evaluation of root canal treatment difficulty and proposed paradigm of whole life cycle management of dental caries. Advanced techniques conducted here includes Composite Resin Minimally Invasive Aesthetic Restoration, CAD/CAM Chair-Side Digital Tooth Restoration, Endodontic Microsurgery, Intentional tooth Replantation, Pulp Revascularization, Minimally Invasive Treatment for Complications of Root Canal Therapy. Currently, the department has been well recognized as the leading treatment center for caries and endodontic diseases in China.

Education And Research
The aim of our department is to build the world-class Cariology & Endodontics discipline, the world-class professional team, and the world-class dental education, contributing to the "Healthy China 2030". The dedicated work of our department has been acknowledged by 7 first prizes for scientific and technological progress at national and provincial levels. A talent team has been established, consisting of nationally-renowned teachers, outstanding medical experts of the Ministry of Health, nationally outstanding investigators/young investigators, and so on. The department has published more than 800 academic papers on top international journals including Cell Stem Cell, Nature Communications, Journal of Dental Research, Caries Research, Journal of Endodontics, Dental Materials, etc., obtained more than 10 national invention patents, and edited more than 20 academic monographs and textbooks for the past 10 years, making great contributions to the development of Cariology & Endodontics discipline.
