The Department of Oral Medicine in West China Hospital of Stomatology is one of the oldest, largest and most prestigious center for the comprehensive diagnosis and treatment of oral mucosal diseases in China. It has been approved as the National Key Clinical Specialty with covering an area of around 600 m2 and 21 dentistry complex treatment chairs. The department boasts strong faculty including 5 professors and 3 associated professors, and all of them have the doctoral degree and the relevant professional overseas study experience.
Clinic
The department mainly focuses on the oral mucosal diseases for decades, including oral potentially malignant disorders (oral lichen planus, oral leukoplakia, etc.), oral ulcerative diseases, infectious diseases, bullous diseases, burning mouth syndrome etc., and the center has much professional experience in the clinic. Also, the multi-disciplinary diagnosis and treatment are being performed to diagnose and treat the rare cases. Various new technologies/examinations including non-invasive assessments (toluidine blue staining, autofluorescence detection and endoscopic dyeing, etc.) to predict the cancer risk, chair-side multidimensional evaluations (head mounted magnifying glass, endoscope and digital microscope, etc.), microscopic examination of pathogenic microorganisms, ultrasound therapy, laser therapy, photodynamic therapy, biofeedback therapy, etc. are performed in the clinic and laid the foundation for diagnostic and therapeutic approaches in oral medicine.
In line with the "exploit, innovation, help and comfort", by providing professional medical skills and well medical ethics, this center is widely awarded by the patients with oral mucosal diseases all over the country.
Teaching
The department is the national training base for oral mucosal diseases. The training goal is not only to master the common diseases, but also to know how to diagnose and treat the rare diseases. The department is the chief editor of the national planning textbook "Diseases of Oral Mucosa" (for undergraduates), the assistant editor of "Oral Clinical Pharmacology" and "Diseases of Oral Mucosa " (for postgraduates). Totally, this center has published more than 10 monographs, and was awarded the first prize for teaching achievements at the university level and the second prize for teaching achievements in Sichuan province.
Research
Following the "international frontier, combination of demostic and abroad, reality in West China", this center mainly focuses on the immune pathogenesis and immunotherapy of oral mucosal diseases, the carcinogenesis mechanism of oral mucosa and the new technology of accurate monitoring, the crosstalk between oral mucosa and microorganisms, and the research and development of sustained/ controlled release preparations. Supported by the series of national research projects, the department has published many high-level papers, established several clinic guidelines, obtained many invention patents, scientific and technological achievement awards, subsequently establishing a professional discipline of oral mucosal disease, which not only embodies social benefits and responsibilities, but also is in the forefront of China and has a positive influence in this field around the world.
